Our world has always been at cusp of revolutions. Since the beginning of the 21st century, we have been witness to the emergence of major technological revolutions, be they in the form of popular and sophisticated Apple products or of the much recent creation of the world’s largest telescope- Gran Telescopio Canarias. We have also stood spectators to death from wars, genocides, and terrorist attacks, and the degradation of our environment as it fell into the hands of our lifestyle of immense comfort and luxury.
Between creation and destruction, we were then mere children trying to comprehend the workings of our world and looking for guidance and shelter whenever life seemed distraught. Now, being at a university, we are well capable of fathoming the implications of human actions more than others, as we perceive them at a point of our transformation from teenagers to adults, and realize that we have a crucial role to play in the world.
It is now our duty to delve into this world, amidst condolences and celebrations, and decide the nature and manner of our deeds that will, yet again, reshape our lives and lives of those who are dependent on us. Armed with a multitude of resources, we possess the capability of funneling our thoughts into actions.
At the University of South Carolina, Zeitgeist exists as a platform for communicating such ideas of revolutions and innovations relevant to the contemporary times. It is an intellectual interdisciplinary magazine that makes an effort to express and discuss the remodeling of our perception of the world at these crossroads and throw light on artistic, cultural, ethical and political climate, ambience, and morals of our era.
In our very first publication, you will find the theme of “Transformations” being highlighted through the discussion of changes of our outlook towards globalization, nature of the universe, immigration policies, role of a student, and the purpose of art. These varied articles put forth a new attitude to holistically analyze the world around us. The Zeitgeist team hopes that you enjoy these articles, find them useful for the growth of your ideas, and that you are influenced to join us and contribute in the same manner for the establishment of an enlightened network of students and citizens of the world.
